Welcome!Church Service

The Church of the River is a progressive church and a liberal church in Memphis, Tennessee. Although rooted in the Christian and Jewish traditions, Unitarian churches such as ours have no creed or dogma to which members must agree. As one early Unitarian minister said, “We need not think alike to love alike.” Therefore, we are a welcoming church for anyone in Memphis, and we celebrate the diversity of our community. Our members come from many different religious backgrounds and beliefs, and often are searching for a more non-traditional or contemporary church experience. Some families are of mixed-faiths or mixed-race, and find Church of the River to be a place where they feel very much at home. Some may even be agnostic or atheist. As a gay-friendly church, Church of the River also welcomes members of the GLBT community, and stands up for the rights of all. So if you’re looking for a caring, open-minded congregation that encourages seekers to find their own spiritual path, we hope you’ll visit The First Unitarian Church of Memphis, the Church of the River. Come gather with us as we nurture our spirits and work together to make Memphis—and the world—a better place.
