Sexton Job Summary

The purpose of the Sexton is to keep our building and grounds clean and orderly; perform basic preventative maintenance and repairs; set up church or rooms for use as needed; open and close church as needed for church activities or for construction, repair or maintenance needs. The goal of the Sexton is to help make our church a safe, attractive, clean and pleasant place to work and to attend church activities and functions.

  • The Sexton will keep the Office Administrator, Minister, and Buildings and Grounds Committee advised of dangers or concerns about the condition and maintenance of the church building and grounds.
  • The Sexton will keep and maintain a 30-day supply of regularly used cleaning and maintenance supplies as needed.
  • The Sexton will attend regularly scheduled staff meetings. This position reports to the Minister and will work with the Buildings and Ground Committee as requested.

Job Responsibilities

Daily

  1. Keep all church entrances and yard clear of debris/litter. Keep leaves, sand, and dirt away from entrances.
  2. Vacuuming/Sweeping/Dusting as needed beyond that provided by hired cleaning services.
  3. Make sure all bathroom/kitchen areas are clean and have adequate supplies as needed.
  4. Make sure all trash is emptied and recycled in appropriate manner.
  5. Monitor heating/cooling thermostats making sure they are programmed or adjusted as required.
  6. Close and lock all appropriate doors before leaving. Close and lock entrances, exits as required each day and after special events.
  7. Open and close church for scheduled repairs, construction, maintenance.
  8. Check playground for hazards and trash.
  9. Monitor HVAC system and receive text alerts.
  10. CMonitor alarm system and receive alerts.

Weekly

  1. Prepare Church for services (routinely on Friday with flexible hours for week-end preparation including Sunday AM as needed).
  2. Dust all surfaces in church.
  3. Monitor all lights and replace bulbs as needed.
  4. Dry mop floors in church as needed.
  5. Tidy up as needed.
  6. Arrange chairs for services as required or requested by church staff or congregants.
  7. Set up tables/misc. for special services as requested.
  8. Maintain chalice in pulpit.
  9. Wash down Patio/Courtyard area, water plants and clean debris.
  10. Clean doors and windows within reach as needed.
  11. Maintain building for facility use.
  12. Water plants at appropriate season around outside of church.
  13. Scrub and wet mop kitchen.
  14. Spot clean carpets.
  15. Provide inventory list of needed supplies to Office Administrator (as needed) to be ordered.
  16. Monitor plants and beds on grounds and remedy with watering if needed.
  17. Pick up sticks, limbs, and other yard waste.

As Needed

  1. Monitor and give feedback to lawn and landscaping and cleaning services.
  2. Work with contractors.
  3. Monitor and give feedback to maintenance contractors like HVAC and pest control.
  4. Trim outside hedges, prune roses, pick up dead leaves.
  5. Report safety and repair issues.
  6. Assist in taking down and putting back seasonal decorations.
  7. Perform needed set-up and clean-up before and after weddings, funeral services and other functions.
  8. Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs.
  9. Maintain flooring or carpeting.
  10. Shine or clean church floors before big events (dust, mop, vacuum, wet mop, etc.).
  11. Paint and maintain finishes, if appropriate.
  12. Make sure all tools, etc. are properly maintained and stored appropriately.
  13. Clean light fixtures on patio.
  14. Clear out clutter and organize storage and facilities.
  15. Follow and complete checklist or work lists.
  16. Reset Boiler as needed.
  17. Winterize church for freezing temperatures and apply de-ice as needed.
  18. Put up and take down signage.

Other duties may be required that may or may not require extra pay or comp. time depending upon nature of requests, frequency, or time of day.

Required Skills & Experience

  1. Education and experience-High School diploma or GED, with more than two years of related experience or training.
  2. The ability to read, communicate, comprehend, and carry out instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  3. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide units of measure.
  4. The candidate for this position must have adequate reliable transportation.
  5. The candidate must be a self-starter, capable of taking initiative while at the same time being responsible and accountable to other staff members with whom he or she will be working.
  6. Willingness to keep a record of hours if requested.

The individual in this position must possess physical and sensory capability necessary to perform all essential job functions and responsibilities safely and successfully. This includes but is not limited to:

Physical Demands

  1. The capability to safely work with power tools such as drills, saws, mower, floor buffer and shrub trimmer.
  2. The capability to climb steps and ladders as well as to bend, pull and push.
  3. The capability to move and carry objects. The ability to carry and lift up to 50 lbs.

Candidates for this position must complete a required background check. The individual hired will report to the Minister and/or other staff as designated.

Hours & Compensation

This position may range between 15hr/week up to 30 hr/week, with the possibility of additional hours as needed. Employee working routinely at 30 hr or more per week will be eligible to receive employee benefits. Competitive pay based on experience.
