Job Announcement: Music Director

First Unitarian Church of Memphis - The Church of the River

Our Goal

The Music Director is an integral member of the church staff, whose creative collaboration with other worship leaders provides meaningful and inspiring worship experiences. The candidate should possess broad musical training and experience, knowledge of diverse and inclusive musical repertoire, a desire to collaborate closely with other worship leaders, an interest in utilizing new technologies, and a vision for the future growth of the music program.

Reports to: Minister

Works in collaboration with: Minister, Director of Religious Education, Church Pianist, Volunteer Choir, other volunteer and professional musicians as needed

Status: Part-Time (10 hours/week); 10 months per year, with flexible summer schedule

Compensation: Salary range is $11,550-$15,250 based on experience and skillset (As per UUA Salary Guidelines), Status = Non-exempt

Choir Leadership

  • Prepare and direct choral and congregational music for worship services
  • Recruit singers for the sanctuary choir, affectionately known the "Awesome Little Choir" (ALC) and conduct weekly choir rehearsals
  • Encourage and support the musical participation of the wider church community, especially the children of the church

Planning Responsibilities

  • Select and prepare service music, appropriate to the season or message, in collaboration with the minister and other participating church staff
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Maintain the church music library, with the assistance of choir volunteers

Budget-Related Responsibilities

  • Operate within approved annual music budget for purchasing music scores, hiring special musicians, personal training, and miscellaneous music program expenses
  • Arrange for substitute musician(s) during vacations or absences
  • Arrange for repair and tuning or other maintenance of musical instruments and other equipment


  • Bachelor of Music degree (not necessarily choral music), Master's preferred

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Demonstrated competence leading, conducting, and developing a choir
  • The ability to work effectively with singers of varying skill levels
  • Excellent communication skills
  • A desire and capacity for creative collaboration
  • Strong organizational skills and the capacity to manage time, volunteers, and budget
  • The ability to make strong connections within and beyond the congregation
  • Knowledge of a diverse array of musical repertoire
  • Cultural sensitivity and a commitment to intercultural competence
